Chapter 6
We had to travel out to Loyola Marymount to the Sacred Heart Chapel to find Holy Cross. Lovely location on the west side. Surrounded by greenery and the college campus, the chapel had stood there in a style reminiscent of Spanish Gothic architecture since its construction in the mid-1950s.
Since most of us could fly, we traveled as high above the city as we could to get there. Wind Tunnel carried Trina in her wind cones. Light Rider had Alloy, who wasn't affected by the electricity that it took to keep them aloft. Wild Swan wasn't carrying anyone. I was able to tote Nelson without too much discomfort by keeping my arms solid and cradling him. I'll have to hand it to him â he looked nervous at first, but then he seemed to enjoy it. Some people would shit themselves, as high up as we were to avoid being spotted by any street crowds. Well, we were spotted, but we were out of throwing distance. We weren't out of shooting distance, though. But no, we didn't get shot at.
Father Jacob Davies, aka Holy Cross, was a relatively young Jesuit priest. As we descended to the chapel, we could see quite a crowd had gathered around on the lawn outside of the structure. Holy Cross was speaking, wearing a somewhat antiquated Jesuit-type robe. He had his own ways, but when I'd met him in the past, he only struck me as a good man.
With a crowd of this size gathered and, surprisingly, not an angry one, I figured Holy Cross must be feeling pretty good. He genuinely wanted to help people, and I think Dr. Anonymous sort of got in his way. You know... if you're exposed as a SPI for your works of any kind, then Dr. A was there to make it unhappen. But now? The good Father could open his arms and share his God-given gift with people. He had helped some SPIs in the past, but now he could go public. Looked like he'd already developed quite a following.
We heard him as we landed behind him, as out of sight as we could be. "...and you will be unburdened by the guilt of your sins. A clean slate. Born again."
Yeah, that's what Holy Cross could do for you. He was a conscience-cleaner. It wasn't exactly memory-wipe, but it was close enough. I didn't expect he'd have been working with Dr. Anonymous, but you had to ask. If nothing else, maybe he could shed some light on how his ability worked that would give us a clue about Dr. A.
From the front of the crowd, people began to approach Holy Cross. This made me uncomfortable, but he didn't seem the slightest bit concerned. He held out his hands to a young man, laying his palms aside the man's head. "Let the light of purification cleanse your soul," he said in a sympathetic, gentle manner.
The young man's face appeared anguished at first, then euphoric. Then he began to weep.
